Quality Assurance & Quality Control

Module 11 resources. Start with the written lesson. Keep the Quick Reference and the Grace QA/QC Process page open when you build a phase plan and when a set is about to go out.

Module 11 throughline: A project moves to the next phase only after it meets quality standards. Many people do the QA/QC work. The project manager is the accountable owner for quality, regardless of who performs the specific steps in the process.

What you will be able to do

  • ✓Put every QA Review and Quality Review on the phase plan with a date and a named reviewer, and book the Construction Documents QC Reviewer at least 3 weeks before the signing and sealing deadline.
  • ✓Confirm from the record, before the QC Form goes out, that every discipline checked its own work against the QA Prompts.
  • ✓Read the Quality Control Form and say what every blank row means.
  • ✓Put an item that cannot close inside the phase into the Design Team Report, where the QC Reviewer and the Architect of Record see it before the set goes out.

The Archetype Lens

In QA/QC, the Competent Coordinator records a problem and does not act on it.

The QC Form has a row for every check. The Coordinator fills in the rows for work that is done, and does not follow up on the rest.

At risk here

Competent Coordinator

Logs and documents instead of intervening. Trusts the meeting cadence over the timely call.

Obsessed Designer

Optimizes for the design. Treats budget, client ops, and team load as someone else’s problem.

People Pleaser

Leads with relationship. Says yes, softens bad news, absorbs cost to dodge the hard conversation.

Accountable Owner

Owns the intersections. Reads signals early, stops work, presents options, protects the outcome.

The situation

It is Wednesday. The set goes out Friday. Two findings are still open. The mechanical lead says the team will fix one of them next phase.

✗ What the Coordinator does

Writes it in the meeting notes and lets the set go, with the back check row empty.

✓ What the Owner does

Writes both items into the Design Team Report, sends the one with no answer to the discipline lead today, and tells the Principal before Friday which open items the set includes.
